After Mojo abducted Betsy, Brian joined forces with the New Mutants to rescue her. Following the rescue, Betsy became a member of the X-Men as Psylocke, though the Braddocks remained unaware that Roma had orchestrated events to tie them to the mutant team. After the X-Men, including Betsy, were thought to have perished, Brian and Meggan joined forces with former X-Men Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, and Phoenix to establish Excalibur and continue the X-Men's legacy. However, Roma secretly placed a "jinx" on Brian to ensure his continued involvement with the team, which made it difficult for him to act independently. Excalibur often worked alongside figures like Dai Thomas, Brigadier Alysande Stuart of W.H.O., and her brother Alistaire. During this time, Brian reconnected with Courtney Ross, unaware that her Earth-794 counterpart, Sat-Yr-9, had killed and replaced her. The team later followed Rachel Summers to a demon-possessed New York, where Brian's costume was destroyed, and his powers were weakened.
